compete with Alexander are the great teachers of rehgion,
all of whom sprang from Asia.
In the year 711 Samarcand was conquered by the Arabs,
Islam Bai.
and in 12 19 was plundered by the great Mongol conqueror,
Jenghiz Khan. But a fresh era of greatness came to the
city under Tamerlane—that is, Timur the Lame—who
wrote in his famous memoirs :
" It is the duty of a victorious
king to subject to his power every kingdom that is op-
pressed by its rulers ; it is for that reason I have freed
