Mongolian ; but they also spoke Russian fluently, and
during the time they were in my service they learned to
speak Jagatai Turkic, so as to be able to speak freely with
their Mohammedan comrades. They brought with them
from Chita weapons, ammunition and clothing, and had
received their pay for two years in advance. The Czar
had commanded that they were not to cost me anything.

Within a very short time they grew so devoted to me that
they would have laid down their lives to serve me, and I
grew as much attached to them as I already was to their
Russian comrades, Sirkin and Chernoff. As for these two
I felt I could not part with them, but instead despatched
a courier to Kashgar, with the request that I might keep
them as well.
Then, accompanied by a long cavalcade of horsemen, we
