we should never have seen these ruins, for the beams^^and
posts, of which they principally consisted, had, when seen
from the distance, an extraordinary resemblance to the
dry tree-trunks that stood scattered all about the locality.

with our only spade. I sketched them and measured

of value, such^as Chinese money, fragments of earthenware,
iron axes, small sacrificial bowls. On some of the pieces
of wood were artistic carvings of human figures ; one of
them resembled a king with a crown on his head and a
trident in his hand, probably a representation of some
Buddhist divinity. These wooden sculptures must at all
costs be preserved, and accordingly we laid them on one
side in a heap.
