148 ADVENTURES IN TIBET.
lay over to such an extent that I had to sit astride the
windward gunwale.
The happy days of my holiday were soon past, and once
more the caravan was loaded up and ready to start. This
time the Cossacks Chernoff and Cherdon were the leaders
of the caravan, and they had orders to make their way
to the fertile valley of Mandarlik in Northern Tibet, where
I was to join them two months later. Accordingly we
said good-bye to our peaceful village by the Tarim, to
which the natives had given the name of Tura-salghan-uy,
meaning " the house which the great man built." As we
turned our backs upon it, we saw a flock of conceited crows
marching about inspecting it, though for the future the
chief inhabitants of our deserted huts would be scorpions
and spiders. It was very fortunate that we were not settled
there a year later, for when the spring freshets swept down
the river early in 1901, they carried away the whole of
the left bank, and our huts and stable and the solitary
poplar that adorned our market-place all disappeared in a
moment and were never seen again.
