behind the night before, but everybody assumed that he

with them. The poor fellow was ill ; but we at once gave

Every night I now had vigilant watch kept, and
the Cossacks took it in turn to sit up with the animals

16,630 feet above the level of the sea. Thus the lofty
table-land showed no sign of decreasing elevation. Every
night the thermometer fell several degrees below freezing
