be directed against their left wing, as it was during
the Chinese War in 1894.
On the other hand, I think that the Japanese
made a mistake in not following up the first two
days’ operations with new demonstrations and con-
tinued attacks in this direction, whilst their main
assault was taking place. On August 21st, 22nd
and 23rd, there were, with a single unimportant
exception, no demonstrations at all carried out on
the western part of the theatre of operations.
Everything was quiet here, so that it soon became
evident to the Russians that the fighting here
had been nothing but a feint to divert their atten-
tion from the real point of attack. This made it
possible for them to concentrate, at the crucial
moment, a sufficient force to stop the Japanese
onslaught and turn the tide of the battle in their
favour.
