very leisurely. To those to whom a sea voyage
has been prescribed, and who are in need of
brain-rest, these inter-Lofoden packets afford an
unrivalled means of obtaining bracing sea air; total
change from the enervating influences of wealth
and luxury; delicious renunciation of
conventional and fashionable tomfooleries; and sea
voyages without sea-sickness, as the grand channels
through which the packet winds are land-locked.
These packets are small; cannot accommodate a
large party—such as ours with six ladies—but are
otherwise all that is desirable for the objects above
named. They are, in fact, public steam-yachts.
We had but little of the characteristic odour
this summer. The cod harvest was nearly finished
when we arrived; the liver boiling was over, and
only a few stockfish were hanging in the sun.
The export season had evidently ended, and these
were but a small residue retained for home
consumption.
Our most characteristic example of Lofoden
scenery this year was in the neighbourhood of
Svolvaer station. There is a curious projection
of the jagged rock a little to the north of the
landing place, which appears like two sculptured
figures leaning towards each other, head to head.
One of the ladies named it “Confidential Peak.”
