CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARLY
SWEDISH SETTLERS IN
MINNESOTA

Protesting and objecting I was nevertheless drafted
to say a few words as to the Life and Characteristics of
the Swedes who came to Minnesota when it was a
wilderness, and who, with immigrants and descendants of
immigrants from other European countries, laid the
foundations for a great state. I was not so drafted as an
authority on the subject, for I am not; but presumably
because I was among the first born to Swedish parents
in one of the early Swedish settlements in the state and,
hence, must have gained some knowledge from personal
observation.

There had been some efforts to settle and develop
this territory prior to 1850, but on a very small scale.
A few Swedes also strayed here before that time; but,
speaking generally, we may say that from the beginning
of that decade the influx into this territory from
Sweden, as well as from elsewhere, became a steady
stream which not even the civil war nor the terrors of
the Sioux outbreak of 1862 wholly checked. No one
can gainsay that in the actual development of the state,
the Swedes and their brethren, the Norwegians and
Danes, largely of the same characteristics, and who
