TYPICAL “AMERICA LETTERS”

The following letters, typical of thousands of
“America letters,” were written by Swedish immigrants who
settled in Illinois and Iowa. The names of the writers
and the places from which they were written are

history of the great migration from Sweden to America.
The original letters are the property of Mrs. Alfred
Gulbransen of Minneapolis, who very kindly placed
them at the disposal of the copyist and translator. The
letters tell their own story: They were brought to America
by Jonas P. Zackrison and preserved in the home
of Oliver Stephenson until his death, when they became
the property of the present custodian.

[1] In 1859 Dr. C. H. Gran of Andover, Illinois,
attempted to organize a colony in Kansas. His “Kansas”
meeting in Galesburg in 1857 was well attended and many
Swedes were interested in his proposition, but his efforts
ended in failure, as the reappearance of his medical
advertisement in Hemlandet in December, 1859, bears
witness. His idea was to operate on a communistic basis for
a time. See Hemlandet, June 3, September 18, and
December 3, 1857, and May 22 and December 18, 1858.
