school and Synod, and moves to Chicago. The
Scandinavian students stand solidly by him; and all leave
the University except one Norwegian and one Dane. A
special meeting of the Scandinavian Conference is called.
Reynolds and Harkey appear in person to attack
Esbjörn; but the Conferences uphold him unanimously.
Later in the year the Augustana Synod is organized, and
the Augustana Theological Seminary is founded in
Chicago. [1]
A new and more important period had begun. If
we could follow it a little further we should see the
beginning of a higher education among Swedish
Methodists and Baptists. A little further still, and we should
see Ansgarius College, a Swedish Lutheran institution,
but outside of the ranks of the Augustana Synod, arise
in Illinois. We should further see how this institution,
was connected with the beginning of higher education
among the Swedish-American Mission-Friends. [2]
