Diderot started to work on this story in 1760. In 1780 he handed a version of the manuscript to Meister who included it in the secret newsletter Correspondance littéraire, where he had succeeded Grimm as editor. Diderot edited the final version of the manuscript in 1782--1783, and the book was first published in 1796. It has since appeared in more than 70 editions.

Diderot started to work on this story in 1762 and edited the final version of the manuscript in 1782--1783. Goethe and Schiller had acquired a copy of the manuscript, and the first publication was a German translation by Goethe in 1804. The first French edition was printed in 1821, but Diderot's original manuscript was found only in 1890 and printed in 1891 and 1963.
