1728--1729 moves to Paris, enters Harcourt college
1732 exam from Harcourt, enters the Sorbonne
1733 works at a lawyer's office
1734--1746 various jobs
1736 his father stops supporting him
1742 meets Rousseau, d'Alembert, and Condillac
1743 marries Anne-Toinette Champion
1747 meets Le Breton, is contracted as editor of the Encyclopédie
1749 sent to jail for Lettre sur les aveugles
1750 meets Grimm
1751--1759 the first 7 volumes of the Encyclopédie are
published
1751 meets Holbach
1752 the Encyclopédie is banned by the king, editorial work
stops for three months
1753 Diderot's daughter Angélique is born (later madame de
Vandeull)
1757 d'Alembert's article on Geneva is published, causing much
reaction, Rousseau abandons the Encyclopédie
1759 the Encyclopédie is permanently banned, d'Alembert
leaves the editorial office
1762 the first volume of illustration plates to the
Encyclopédie are published, as the ban allows illustrations to
be published. Editorial work on the text volumes continues in secret
1765 the entire Encyclopédie, volumes 1--17, is published,
allegedly from Switzerland, without the permission of the French king
1772 the Encyclopédie is finished
1773 travels to Russia
1784 died on July, 31st

- Diderot started to work on this story in 1760. In 1780 he handed
a version of the manuscript to Meister who included it in the secret
newsletter Correspondance littéraire, where he had succeeded
Grimm as editor. Diderot edited the final version of the manuscript
in 1782--1783, and the book was first published in 1796. It has since
appeared in more than 70 editions.

version of the manuscript in 1782--1783. Goethe and Schiller had
acquired a copy of the manuscript, and the first publication was a
German translation by Goethe in 1804.
The first French edition was printed in 1821, but Diderot's original
manuscript was found only in 1890 and printed in 1891 and 1963.
