Otto Donner was born on December 15, 1835, in Gamla Karleby. He was a younger son of kommerserådet Andreas Donner and Olava Mathilda Dahlström.
He was professor of sanskrit at the university of Helsinki and also taught at Berlin for a short period.
He served in the Finnish senate and was also Minister of Church Affairs during the government of Mechelin and opposed the drafting of Finnish soldiers into the Russian army.
He published extensively works on a variety of topics.
He married Wilhelmina Charlotta Sofia Munck, daughter of the general friherre Johan Reinhold Munck and Wilhelmina von Kraemer.
