The following is a rough translation of the 1912 article (link below) in the Swedish encyclopedia Nordisk familjebok, written by Swedish art critic Georg Nordensvan:

Painter Amalia Lindegren was born on May 22, 1814 in Stockholm and died on December 27, 1891. She started to draw portraits in pencil, and later took up painting in oil, without any formal training. The Swedish sculptor Carl Gustaf Qvarnström helped her and a few other ladies to gain access to the education of the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm during a few months in 1849. In 1850 she got a stipend for travelling and went to Paris, where she painted at the atelliers of Cogniet and of Agne Tissier. From there, she sent back to Stockholm a painting "Dryckesscen" (drinking party), which was bought by Konstföreningen ("the art association") and distributed as a lithography to their members. Among her works from this period are "Farfars undervisning" (grandpa teaching) and "Änkan och hennes barn" (widow and her children), both painted in 1853. In Munich she painted "Evangelisten Matteus" (St. Matthew, the evangelist, 1854) and later went to Italy, where she painted genre pictures. After yet another year in Paris, she returned to Stockholm in 1856, where she became a member of the Academy of Arts and in 1857 travelled to the Dalecarlia province, where she found an environment and company that suited her. Many of her popular paintings of family life were created here, including "Lillans sista bädd" (1858), "Mormors öga" (1858), "Söndagsafton i en dalstuga" (1860), "Frukosten" (1866). Among her portraits are noted Qvarnström (1852), L. A. Lindholm (about the same time), H. Reuterdahl (1856), Karl XV, queen Lovisa (1859), F. Åkerman, J. P. Lefren, A. Tidemand (1861; Göteborgs museum), J. af Kléen, prince Oscar with wife, Signe Hebbe, crown princess Lovisa (1869), A. Fryxell, H. Hamilton.
