Alfred May, born 1804 in London, died 1878 in Stockholm, was a language teacher, translator from Swedish to English and author of a Practical grammar of the Swedish language, with reading and writing exercises (1849, several later editions). He moved to Sweden in 1831, to become a teacher of English at a school (Hillska skolan å Barnängen) in Stockholm, where he stayed until the school closed in 1846. He also worked as a private teacher. Among his pupils were king Oscar I of Sweden and Norway and his children.
