Born in 1837 in Vegesack near Bremen, Germany, where he was trained as a Methodist preacher and sent in the 1860s to Zürich, Switzerland. Active in Oldenburg, Frankfurt am Main, Karlsruhe, Bern, Bremen, Basel. Documented in Heidrun Alzheimer-Haller, Handbuch zur narrativen Volksaufklärung: Moralische Geschichten 1780-1848 (2013), p. 616.
He was the editor of Der Evangelist and published several books, among them Sammlung von Beispielen über biblische Hauptbegriffe, ein Handbuch für geistliche Lehrer, Sonntagsschullehrer und die Familie (1887), which is the basis for the Swedish work De bibliska hufvudbegreppen (1889) by Hans Nilson.
